The elderly individuals in your family may find it difficult to navigate your homes day-to-day, especially because of their age and health conditions where they are at risk for falls. These random falls may seem trivial to some, but these could have adverse effects on their weaker health conditions. That is why it is important to ensure that your homes are arranged in ways that are fall-free.

Here are five tips that can help prevent your senior family members from falls:

  • Identify fall-prone areas at home

Of course, the problem at home has to be identified. Map out the areas in the house that your senior family members frequent and check if their daily activities may result in falls.

  • Install handrails/support bars in fall-prone areas

If you find areas at home that could lead to falls for your senior loved ones, you could install support bars and handrails in these areas. You can also provide them with a cane for easier navigation around the house.

  • Clear the hallways and staircases

Your senior family members could trip if small items are scattered around the house. Make sure to clean up even the smallest of clutter to avoid possibly severe falls.

  • Wear shoes or slippers

Let your seniors wear shoes, slippers, or any footwear that has good grip. Socks are not advisable to wear around the house. If your senior loved ones wear socks, they are very likely to slip on hardwood floors.

  • One-level homes

Senior care experts assert that the best way for fall prevention is to stay in a home with only one floor, or someplace where it won’t be necessary for them to go up flights of stairs.
